2-4-Tuesday

I don't know how many different artists have covered songs from the Beatles. What I do know is that most of them fall flat. Even when I hear one and think "hey, that's not too bad" it still never comes close to the original (think Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan or Come Together by Aerosmith). So I know I am going out on a limb with this one, but the vote is up to you:

The Beatles - I Will

Alison Krauss & Tony Furtado

Can't beat the Beatles on this one. I especially love the vocal bass line (listen carefully).

Grandaddy did a "cover" of Revolution, but changed the tune. It wouldn't win, either, but I like it.

I've heard Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" gives the Beatles a run for their money, but I don't know...

I think Joe Cocker's version is better... but how can you beat a cover that features a gospel choir? I submit that you cannot.

I'm sorta with Ben on this one. For me Aerosmith's 'Come Together' is great take on one of the greatest (and most influential)Rock-n-Roll songs of all time. Aerosmith does justice to the original while putting their unique mark on it. For me both versions stand alone. Same thing with Joe Cocker. If it's possible, Cocker actually made the song richer and captures the heart of the song and the feeling of the 60s more fully. At the same time to even take that song out of the context of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' fails to understand the greatness of the song. Other Beatles covers in my opinion vary from horrible to "I really like that". But for me Beatles doing Beatles has a sort of special chemistry that is unnatainable by any other artist. Even when I've heard the indiidual Beatles perfoming Beatles songs, it's just not the same.

This alternate version has a bit of "Dolly Parton" twang to it (and that isn't my favorite way to listen to the Beatles...
