Dark Knight

This is a poster by Olly Moss for the upcoming Dark Knight. The poster will be on sale for one day only. It costs $40 here. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to get one, but this sure is sweet.

New Year

I nearly kept my New Years resolution from last year. I only posted about movies once or twice.

This is a new year and I thought you might find this interesting:

Absolutely Unique

Have you ever sat in traffic listening to your favorite CD and wondered "is anyone else in the world sitting in their car listening to this exact song at this exact moment?" What are the chances?

Well there are nearly a billion cars on the roads of the world and, assuming that your favorite CD is at least a gold record, one million of those cars could contain that CD. Even if only one tenth of those CDs made it into cars, and only one one hundredth of the cars containing the CD are currently being driven, that's still 1,000 cars simultaneously being operated with the potential of listening to your same song. That's not terrible odds... of course you could add levels of complication like "...driving a Buick with a busted front end and heading North by Northwest while listening to..." and make the odds go way down.

There are also times when what you are doing is so strange that the question becomes "has anyone in history ever done this?" (which, by the way, if you can immediately, with confidence, say 'I am the first', you should probably stop right then... there's probably a good reason why no one else has done it). Some people get this feeling when walking on freshly fallen snow. I hate to burst your bubble but that snow has been walked on, peed on, sweated out of someones forehead, evaporated, shaken off a wet dog, boiled, drunk, and spit out millions of times over thousands of years. I, however, did something yesterday that has never been done before. I didn't realize I had done it till after the fact, but I am convinced that my actions were unique across time, space, and multiple duplicate dimensions; I watched the film The Remains of the Day while wearing a Bruce Lee t-shirt.

Let that soak in.

You might be tempted to think that it's not really that strange. I assure you, it is. You think, "well, I'm sure some random guy wearing a Bruce Lee t-shirt could have, spur-of-the-moment, decided to walk into the theater." But no, that never happened. I am the first, and may well be the last. I am a unique individual dang it.

Animal Noises

Most of you know that Daniel loves making animal noises, some of his best have been the horse, a pig, and the turtle ("doggle doggle"?). Anyhow, neither Michal nor I know where he learned this one:

New Year

For those of you who didn't already know, we are now in a 'new' year. This doesn't actually mean anything (it's like being a year older --- you're not really more than a day older than you were before your birthday).

However, it is nice to be able to have a mark on a timeline that you can use to reposition yourself or evaluate your life's trajectory. We often refer to this recalibration as 'New Years Resolutions'. Things that we resolve to accomplish in the new year.

Usually these resolutions involve some health/fitness concern or are vague (and thus achievable) like 'swearing less in public places when kids are present'.

So here's this years resolution (pertaining to blgging) from me:

"I [Ben] hereby resolve
to write about stuff
other than movies."

Okay, so that's not really a big deal (I can still comment on Peter's posts), but there is so much that I am interested in other than movies that I thought it would be a good discipline to write about those things and not Hollywood. Of course, I will end up making references to movies or actors, but only as they pertain to whatever I am writing about.

So how about you all, any good resolutions this year?

WARNING

WARNING: Do not watch the new Eagle Eye trailer if you have any desire to watch this film! That's right, if you watch the new trailer you will ruin all surprise within the film.

The original trailer left you wondering what was going to happen and how this worked into a story, the new trailer shows how the story will unfold, tells you what the plot-twist is, and hints at the resolution.

Don't watch, wait a month and see it in the theater.

TR2N

Sometimes I know I'm a Jonny-come-lately. We don't watch television and so I stumble upon news after most people think it's common knowledge. However, I would be surprised if any of you have heard of this yet:

TRON 2

A teaser trailer was released at Comic-con in California a couple days ago. It shows an older Jeff Bridges watching an updated light-bike race. Pretty cool.

Movie Trailers

I was just looking through movie trailers that I hadn't yet seen (on a site that I just found, Trailer Addict). I had just finished watching the trailer for Jim Carry's new movie, Yes Man (looks pretty good), when I saw this: "The Mummy: Tomb of the Drag..." now having already seen the preview for the new Mummy movie I had to wonder if the "tomb of the drag" wouldn't actually garner better reviews than whatever the real full title is.

I have also been thinking recently, does anyone know why pre-views are sometimes called "trailer". Is it because it trails the commercials before the movie?

Preview or teaser seem to make more sense.

Peter, do you know the definitions here?

TV first, Theater later

Peter said recently in a response to the questions "is this film worth seeing in the theater or should we wait for DVD?", if a movie is worth seeing, it's worth seeing in a theater.

So Peter, I've got a question. Mark Cuban, the billionaire / media-mogul / IU Alum is planning on showing movies produced by his company Magnolia Pictures on TV before they are released in the theater.

His hope is that they will do better at the box office because of this rather than worse (as would be expected: "why pay $10 if I can watch it for free?").

What's your opinion, does this make sense or not?

The Movies

One of the things I enjoy about being alive, being an America, and living in Bloomington is the drive-in movies. Now, I know that the drive-in isn't really the best place to "experience" movies (or films) the way they were meant to be enjoyed, that is, on an iPod. Nevertheless, drive-in movies are a lot of fun for multiple reasons. First, you drive, park, open the trunk, pull out your lawn chairs and watch a movie or two in the great outdoors (in other words, you can smoke while watching). Second, at many drive-ins (though, regrettably not the one in Bloomington) you pay by car, not by person. Thus, an entire car-full can often watch a movie (or two) for what? $10!!! And third, something I've already mentioned twice. You often get to see TWO movies in a row, for one low price! So the sound's not great and the picture is harder to see but hey, it's good-ol' American fun.

So if you happen to be in Bloomington today, and you happen to read this. Meet me at the drive-in, tonight's double feature: Wall-e & Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk.

Johnny Come Lately

Not having a TV or regular contact with the outside world means that I usually find out about things late. I get all excited about something, like Flight of the Conchords, and want to tell everyone, and then find out that everyone already knows.

So if you already know about this, sorry... but if you haven't it's gonna be freakin' sweet! Supposedly Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are teaming up to make... TinTin!!!

There was an article about this back in May on the BBC site, but no word yet on when the movies will be out. So, does this mean that Peter Jackson won't be directing The Hobbit? I don't know.
